MassMutual, headquartered in Springfield, MA, announced that it would be donating $100,000 to assist in the relief efforts as a result of the tornadoes which struck Springfield and Western Massachusetts on June 1, 2011. MassMutual says that the donated funds along with funds the company will match from eligible employees and financial professionals will be used to support the Red Cross Pioneer Valley Chapter which has been designated for the Western Mass. Tornado Relief Fund.
Although the tornado struck many areas in the Springfield metropolitan area, MassMutual’s facilities did not suffer any significant damage. The company, however, is taking steps to assist employees, including posting regular updates on storm damages to its workforce, offering counseling and establishing communications links with employees who may have been displaced by the storm.
MassMutual also says that it is working with Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno among others to determine other ways in which the company may be able to help with relief efforts in its hometown and surrounding areas.
