A new report from the insurer finds that Massachusetts drivers live up to their bad reputation
Allstate has bad news for the Bay State. The results of its tenth annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report” are in and the top three cities in Massachusetts all landed at the bottom of the list.
“We don’t want drivers in Massachusetts to be discouraged by their ranking. Instead, we want the report to challenge drivers in the Bay State to make positive changes to their driving,” said Jillian Hanley, Boston Allstate agent. “Our goal with this report is to make the cities that fall on the bottom of the list safer places to live and raise families.”
According to the report, Worcester was dead last on the list while Boston was second to last. Springfield, was the third worst as measured against America’s 200 largest cities in their rates of car collision frequency. This is the first year that Massachusetts has been included in the report since Allstate only returned to the Massachusetts market last year.
In ranking the cities, the insurer took a look at all types of data when compiling a city’s rank including population density and precipitation. Based on Allstate’s data, the likelihood of a collision in Worcester compared to the national average is a whopping 134.8% with the average years between a collision in the city being on average 4.3 years. In Boston the collision likelihood was 129.9% with the average years between collisions being 4.4 years. Fort Collins, Colorado which is ranked as the number one best driving city has a collision likelihood as compared to the national average of -29.6% with 14.2 years being the average time between accidents for drivers there.
While its hard to compare Boston, Worcester and Springfield to Fort Collins, other major metropolitan areas did fare much better than us. New York City comes in on the list at #118, while San Francisco is ranked #180.
