Two members of the Massachusetts insurance industry made the list this year – Arbella Insurance Group and The Rogers & Gray Agency
Congratulations are in order for both Arbella Insurance and Rogers & Gray. These two well-known members of the Massachusetts insurance industry have been named to the BBJ’s Best Places to Work for 2017.
Each year The Boston Business Journal compiles a list of the 80 best places to work in Boston. The winners are selected via anonymous surveys, that are completed by employees and that inquire about various aspects of the employee’s company including benefits provided, company atmosphere, values and loyalty. After the completion of the survey, the results are collected and reviewed by a third-party research firm. The 80 winners are then categorized into extra small, small, medium, large and extra large sized businesses.
Making the list for the ninth consecutive year is Quincy’s Arbella Insurance Group which was ranked as one of the best in the “Extra Large Business” category.
It is such an honor to be named a BBJ Best Place to Work for the ninth consecutive year,” said Ellen Mann, director of human resources at the Arbella Insurance Group. “At Arbella, we put employees first. It’s one thing to say that, but we actually do it. Our strategy is to put employees first. The result is stronger relationships with our customers because engaged employees provide better service and hold themselves accountable. They truly care about the work they do.”
Founded in 1988 by a special act of the legislature, Arbella was originally formed as a way in which to allow the Kemper Group to divest itself of its Massachusetts automobile insurance book of business. From that unique beginning, Arbella has grown to become one of the top five largest writers of automobile insurance in the Commonwealth with more than 1000 employees along with an independent agency network of more than 500 partners.
According to the mutual insurer, investments in employee well-being and growth have been one of the main ingredients in creating a happy workforce. On average, employees stay with the insurance company an average of 10 years, with 10 percent of the current workforce having been with Arbella since its inception nearly 30 years ago. As of 2017, the carrier boasts more than $800M in revenue with approximately $1.5B in assets.
The Rogers & Gray Insurance Agency also made this year’s list as one of Boston’s Best Places to Work. This is the first time the family-owned independent insurance agency has been named to the list. In commenting on his agency’s achievement, David Robinson, President & CEO, Rogers & Gray, says one of the keys to being named a Best Place to Work has been the fact that the agency has remained true to their commitment to core values both with their customers as well as their employees.
Our employees are the lifeblood of our company and the most important asset we have,” said Robinson. “We continually strive to create a culture that fosters appreciation, respect, support and growth. It’s an honor to be recognized for that commitment by the Boston Business Journal.”
Founded in 1906, the Orleans-based agency has grown over the past century to become the 83rd largest independent insurance agency in the country according to the Insurance Journal and the 10th largest insurance broker in Massachusetts per the Boston Business Journal. It was also recently honored as the “Best Independent Insurance Agency to Work For” in the Nation in 2015. Through a team of over 140 dedicated insurance professionals, Rogers & Gray helps its clients manage risk through its nine office locations across the Commonwealth.
