Sumner Gilman, President of Economy Insurance Agency, was tapped yesterday to become the newest member of Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers Governing Committee.
Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers is the industry operated residual market and statistical agent for motor vehicle insurance in the Commonwealth. The Governing Committee is the body “…responsible for the administration of CAR, including the preparation and filing of the Plan and Rules of Operation and the adoption and filing of any amendments to the Plan or Rules of Operation.” The Governing Committee is comprised of thirteen members appointed by the Commissioner of Insurance to serve for six years. Seven members are from insurance companies whereas the remaining six are from associations of insurance. Two of the six members representing insurance producers are from assigned risk producers, or agents who do not have a voluntary contract.
Mr. Gilman’s appointment will be for one of those two seats. “I am ecstatic to be to returning to CAR because it offers me the opportunity to represent my constituents in the Commonwealth, the assigned risk producers.”
This is not Mr. Gilman’s first appointment to the CAR Governing Committee. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Gilman served as an ERP Representative of the CAR Governing Committee from 1986 until July of 2004. During his tenure, he served as both the Vice Chairman and the Chairman of the Governing Committee, occupying the latter post from 1996 until 1998. In additon, he served on a myriad of CAR’s Advisory Committees including the Acturial, Market Review Personal and Budget Committees. Mr. Gilman has been a licensed Massachusetts Producer since 1968 and has been the President of Economy Insurance Agency since 1977.
