In an online interview with MassLive today, Insurance Commissioner Murphy spoke to consumers about their insurance issues and gave a quick update on how Hurricane Sandy had affected the Bay State. Here’s what he had to say about the state of affairs in the aftermath of this week’s hurricane:
Fortunately, we in Massachusetts, fared better than many of our southern neighbors. Most damage reports are coming from the South Coast and Metro-West areas of the state though there is damage throughout the Commonwealth. Currently, the insurance industry has reported a little over 1,000 claims associated with Sandy from MA consumers.

Mass FAIR Plan Special Claim Number For Sandy
The Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association has also issued a special new telephone number to submit claims related to Sandy. That number is 1-866-384-3803. The FAIR plan urges all to use this number as it will substantially increase the association’s efficiency in responding to insureds needs.
In addition as 2:00 p.m on October 26, 2012 the FAIR Plan also instituted a Windstorm and Hail Coverage Limitation. The FAIR Plan says that it attaches these endorsements to policies, “…under certain circumstances, when the National Weather Service has issued a Watch or Warning for a Tropical Storm or Hurricane” any point north of North Carolina or Virginia.
