Mohawk Insurance has been based in Dorchester’s Fields Corner for over 50 years
Similar to the Marchionne Insurance Agency in 2014, we couldn’t quite believe our eyes this weekend when we saw on Twitter that a car has smashed into the Mohawk Insurance and Real Estate Insurance Agency in Dorchester.
According to Mohawk owner’s Michael and Scott Collins, this past Saturday night, sometime before 10PM, a red sedan swerved in the intersection of Dorchester and Melville avenues in the Fields Corner section of Dorchester, literally smashing into the front of the Mohawk Insurance. According to various news outlets, the two people driving in the car were taken to the hospital. Their condition remains unknown. The driver, a man in his forties, apparently swerved out of the intersection into the agency without any warning.
While the damage to the agency office is extensive, most importantly, no one was inside the building at the time of the crash. Due to the level of the damage, however, it is unclear when the agency will be able to open for business.
According to Scott and Michael Collins, the second generation owners of Mohawk, this was not the first time that a car has crashed into their offices. As a result, the brothers intend on petitioning the city to erect some form of barriers in front of their offices. Unfortunately, the agency had just installed a new sign for their offices this year which will now obviously have to be replaced.
A fixture in Fields Corner for over fifty years, Mohawk Insurance and Real Estate was first started by William Collins. Now run by his two sons Michael and Scott, these second generation independent insurance agents also are the second cousins to John Gallagher of the John C. Gallagher Insurance Agency also of Dorchester. As an aside, their maternal grandfather also was the founder and owner (at one time) of the Thomas F. Gallagher Insurance Agency in Hyde Park. They also happen to be related to the publishers of Agency Checklists as well.
As such, we know we are not the only ones in the Massachusetts insurance industry who are thinking of them and wishing them well as they start to get their business back in order.
Best of luck.
