The Top 25 Private Passenger Auto Insurers in the U.S

A look at the largest Private Passenger Auto Insurers in the nation

As it does every March, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners has released its annual market share report of the top 25 Private Passenger Auto Insurers nationwide.  The list is based on filings to the N.A.I.C. and represents the top 25 P&C companies based upon data reported on the State Page of the NAIC’s annual statement for insurers.

Of note, we noticed the following:

  • For a fourth year in a row, GEICO is the number two private passenger auto insurer in the U.S.
  • Only three Massachusetts-based insurers made the list: Liberty Mutual (#6), MAPFRE (#19), and The Hanover.
  • Liberty Mutual inched closer to the Top 5 by surpassing Farmers this year to take the sixth spot.
  • The Top Five PPA Insurers in the U.S. have a Cumulative Market Share of 54.57%.

In 2014, the Berkshire Hathaway Group’s GEICO, overtook Allstate as the second largest private passenger auto insurer in the U.S., and has not relinquished the spot since. State Farm has continued to claim the number one spot as it has done for a number of years now.

The Top 25 private passenger automobile insurance companies

The total amount of Direct Premiums Written for the top 25 Private Passenger Auto Insurers last year, was $214,160,570,743 as compared to $198,814,178,717 dollars in 2016. The total Direct Premiums Earned for this group was $ 209,350,928,165, an increase of $14,080,856,507 over 2016 figures.
