Appleby & Wyman’s Carmen Marciano Retires

On Thursday, May 10, 2018, over one-hundred and fifty family, friends, and insurance executives gathered at the Danversport Yacht Club, in Danvers, to honor A. Carmen Marciano, former owner of the Appleby & Wyman Insurance Agency on his retirement.

Built up Appleby & Wyman

During his tenure as president and CEO of Appleby & Wyman, Carmen guided the agency through a multitude of changes including various agency acquisitions, the opening of the agency’s second office location in Beverly in 1995 and the selling of the agency’s personal lines business in its original location of Concord in 1997. In 2000, Carmen became the sole owner of Appleby & Wyman through a purchase of his former partner’s shares.

Passed the baton to his daughters

As of January 1, 2015, Carmen gave up being the agency’s President and CEO, roles had held since 1986, and became Chairman of Appleby and Wyman. In that role, he gave up being involved in the daily agency activities but acted as an advisor and mentor to the new leadership team including his daughters Lisa Marciano and Christine Scola, President/CEO and executive vice president/CFO, respectively. See Agency Checklists’ article of October 10, 2014, “Changing Of The Guard At The Appleby & Wyman Agency.”

A new owner with same employees

In June of 2017, Cross Insurance Agency acquired Appleby & Wyman. As part of the terms, the employees of Appleby & Wyman continued with the agency after Cross’ acquisition including Lisa Marciano as president. See Agency Checklists’ article of June 19, 2017, “Cross Insurance Acquires Massachusetts’ Appleby & Wyman Agency.”

A few snaps from the party…

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, the photos from the event with Carmen, his wife, his children, friends and industry attendees speak volumes of the high regard, Carmen has garnered in his successful career.

Best wishes from Agency Checklists

According to SIAA, over 20 insurance carriers, in addition to 49 regional master agencies attended this year’s three day business meeting. In commenting on the event, Jim Masiello, Chairman and CEO of SIAA went on to say, “These business meetings are an opportunity to foster relationships with our strategic partner companies and master agencies. Ideas, successes, and challenges are shared and discussed. It’s rare to have an event like this with representatives and executives from more than 20 of the top insurance companies.”

Traveler’s Woodward was the keynote speaker

The keynote speaker for this year’s event was Joan K. Woodward, President of the Travelers Institute and Executive Vice President of Public Policy for Travelers Insurance. She spoke to the event’s attendees on the final day of the event.

“Ms. Woodward provided insight to a number of economic and industry trends in her presentation. We were pleased to have someone with her knowledge and experience at our event,” noted Jim Masiello, Chairman and CEO of SIAA.

How big is SIAA?

SIAA is the largest national alliance of independent insurance agencies in the country. Its master agencies have signed over 6,750 independent agency members, writing more than $7.41 billion of total in-force premium.
According to Masiello, independent agency members succeed because SIAA provides access to companies, resources, and services they otherwise could not utilize.
