Cleaning vs. Disinfecting: What’s the Difference?

There are many questions surrounding the best way to protect your property from COVID-19 and its spread. You may be thinking, “Can I just clean the property myself?”

Let’s first start by looking at the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines cleaning as the “removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces.” Cleaning alone does not kill germs, but removes them, thus lowering the risk of spreading infection. Disinfecting refers to “using chemicals, for example, EPA-registered disinfectants, to kill germs on surfaces.” This process doesn’t necessarily clean dirty surfaces, but it kills the germs further reducing the risk of spreading.

If you have someone within the property that tests positive for COVID-19, do you want to remove those germs from surfaces or kill them?

Based on the definitions, a combination of the two is a good approach. You should consider cleaning your space on a daily basis (COVID confirmed, or not). This includes wiping down all surfaces, especially the high-traffic spots like doorknobs, light switches, remote controls, and keyboards. While doing so, follow the CDC’s recommended guidelines for a cleaning solution, as well as wear the proper gear like disposable gloves and gowns. And be sure to dispose of these items in a plastic trash bag that is sealed shut – you don’t want to spread anything to our essential sanitation engineers.

For the disinfecting portion, you should consider finding a professional resource to support these efforts. A reputable company will not only wipe down high-touch point areas with an EPA-approved disinfectant, but also use either an electrostatic sprayer and/or fogger to reach all areas within an affected room. Doing so can provide peace of mind for all those who enter.

So, as businesses plan to reopen, it’s important to find an experienced company to help rid your property of COVID-19. Be sure to ask them a few questions before signing on the dotted line:

  1. How long have you been in business?
  2. Do you have liability insurance?
  3. What product are you using and is it EPA approved for COVID-19?
  4. What type of PPE will your team be wearing?

Take notice if the company only references cleaning your property as we know this does not kill COVID19 – and we all want to #stopthespread of this virus. If you’re not comfortable with their answers, move on to the next company on your list.

So, based on the definitions of cleaning and disinfecting…which would you choose to protect your property and the people within?
