Alera Group Acquires Gordon Atlantic Insurance Agency

October 20, 2020 by AC Editor

Gordon Atlantic Insurance has been an independent agency for over 100 years

The consolidation of the Massachusetts insurance industry continues with another independent insurance agency acquisition. The Alera Group, a national agency focusing on employee benefits, property and casualty, retirement services, and wealth management firm has announced its acquisition of the Gordon Atlantic Insurance Agency.

The acquisition, effective as of October 1, 2020, is the second local independent agency to join the Alera Group this year. In January of 2020, the Group acquired Massachusetts’ Sylvia Group. See Agency Checklists’ article of January 14, 2020, “Alera Group Acquires Massachusetts’ Sylvia Group.”

According to the terms of the transaction, the Gordon Atlantic team will continue serving its clients in their existing roles and from their location in Norwell. No further terms of the transaction were released.

“As we continue to grow in the Northeast, we are thrilled to have Gordon Atlantic as an Alera Group company,” said Alan Levitz, CEO of Alera Group. “Their decades of industry expertise will be a valuable addition to our expanding presence in the greater Boston area. We are proud to welcome them to Alera Group.”

“At Gordon Atlantic, we take great pride in providing our clients with the best possible insurance solutions for their needs. As an Alera Group company, we are strategically positioned to continue to grow and meet our clients’ needs with industry-leading resources,” said Geoffrey Gordon, Managing Partner of Gordan Atlantic. “We look forward to the collaborative future ahead as part of Alera Group.”

Agency Checklists’ first Agency Interview

Located in Norwell, Massachusetts, Gordon Atlantic has been servings its insureds on the South Shore for many decades. The former Andrew G. Gordon Insurance has been an independent insurance agency based in Norwell for nearly 175 years. First founded by Ebenezer Fogg in the 1840s, the agency was purchased by Andrew Gordon and renamed in 1953. Mr. Gordon’s son, Geoff Gordon, eventually took over the helm of the agency from his father. In 2016, the Andrew G. Gordon Insurance Agency and Atlantic Advisors merged to become Gordon Atlantic Insurance.

On a final note, Mr. Gordon also happened to be the first agent that we ever interviewed on Agency Checklists. For those interested, the interview is available here. Agency Checklists, May 6, 2011,”Talking with Geoff Gordon of the Andrew G. Gordon, Inc. Insurance Agency.”
