Cape Cod’s Rogers & Gray was the only family-owned agency in Mass. included on the list
On August 8th, Insurance Journal, a national publication focusing on the insurance industry, published its 11th annual “Top 100 Independent Property/Casualty Agencies” list. The annual compilation reviews the total property and casualty revenue of independent agencies across the country and then ranks them according to size.
In this latest edition, three Massachusetts independent agencies were included on the 2016 list. Of those three, only one family-owned independent insurance agency, Rogers & Gray, was included on the list.

This is the second year in a row, that the 110 year-old agency has been included on this list which reviews data from more than 36,000 independent insurance agencies from across the nation. Last year, it was selected as the Best Independent Insurance Agency to Work For” in the Nation in 2015. This year, the agency moved up two spots on this list to claim the 83rd spot out of 100 with $18,200,000 in Total P/C Revenue for 2015.
Eastern Insurance and Risk Strategies also named to the Top 100 list
Two other major Massachusetts insurance agencies, Eastern Insurance and Risk Strategies were also named to this year’s list. Boston-based Risk Strategies claimed the highest spot of a Massachusetts-based agency on the list. This year it ranked number 14, climbing up from the 22nd spot in 2015, as one of the largest independent agencies in the U.S. with $121,000,000 in Total P/C Revenue last year.
Eastern Insurance Group, LLC, based in Natick, was the second largest Massachusetts agency appearing on the list. The bank-owned independent agency which claimed the 34th spot for the second year in a row, had $47,511,000 in Total P/C Revenue last year.
Other New England agencies appearing on the list
While not based in Massachusetts, Cross Insurance does have a substantial presence in the Bay State. As such, it should be noted that the Bangor, Maine-based agency made its first appearance on the Top 100 list this year. It claimed the 18th spot with $94, 600,000 in Total 2015 P/C Revenue.
East Providence Rhode Island’s Starkweather & Shepley Insurance Brokerage Inc. also made the cut this year, claiming the 44th spot, down from the 41st spot last year. In 2015, the agency had $37, 418,000 in Total P/C Revenue.
Two independent insurance agencies from Connecticut also make an appearance on this year’s list. Westbrook’s The Gowrie Group claimed the 48th spot on the Top 100 list for a second year in a row, with $34,550,000 in Total P/C Revenue. The John M. Glover Agency of Norwalk jumped up seven places this year, ranking number 77th this year as opposed to 84th last year with $20,000,000 in Total P/C Revenue.
