Two Nominated For Board That Hears Workers’ Comp Cases

February 4, 2022 by State House News Service

Gov. Charlie Baker nominated two attorneys Wednesday to fill vacancies as administrative judges on the Industrial Accident Board.

Both nominations are now before the Governor’s Council

Jamie Spiller Kaplan, a partner at the Wellesley firm Chartwell Law, and Stephen Murray, an associate at Murray Law Office in Milton, were both tapped for six-year terms.

Spiller Kaplan ran the successful 2012 House campaign of first-time candidate Claire Cronin, according to her resume. She worked as a prosecutor in Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz’ office from 2013-2014 and also spent a year and a half at Keches Law Group in Milton. At Chartwell, she manages the New England Workers’ Compensation practice group with clients including insurance carriers, self-insured organizations, and third-party administrators. She is an alumna of Connecticut College (2008) and University of Miami Law School (2011).

According to campaign finance records, a Jamie Spiller employed by Chartwell Law donated $250 to Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito on Sept. 1 of last year. Governor’s councilors, who are tasked with reviewing judicial nominations, have in the past raised questions about campaign donations given close to the time of a nominee’s application.

Murray has spent his entire professional career at Murray Law Office, first clerking there while attending Suffolk Law. As an associate there since 2000, he has handled cases dealing with management of personal injury/tort, workers’ compensation, social security disability, disability retirement, real estate transactions, and criminal defense claims.

According to his resume, Murray captained the tennis team at Boston College, where he received a bachelor’s in communications in 1996.

Both nominations are now before the Governor’s Council. Councilor Christopher Iannella scheduled a hearing on Murray’s nomination for Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m. Spiller Kaplan’s interview was not yet scheduled as of Thursday afternoon.
