The case was referred to the AG’s office by the IFB of Massachusetts

A former Treasurer of the Newton Parent Teacher Organizaton Council (Newton PTO Council) has been charged with more than 20 counts involving various fraudulent schemes, announced Attorney General Maura Healey on August, 16th.

Rebeca Craig, 37, of Boston was indicted by a Statewide Grand Jury on 27 different counts, of which three of those claims involved Submitting a False Insurance Claim. The following is an official breakdown of the 27 counts as announced by the AG: Presentation of False Claims (10 counts), Making a False Statement to the Tax Commissioner (10 Counts), Submitting a False Insurance Claim (3 counts), Forgery (1 Count), and Larceny over $250 (3 Counts).

According to the investigation, first referred to the AG by The Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts (IFB), several of the alleged schemes revolved around the alteration, submission, and falsification of documents in support of insurance claims. In addition to these claims, the defendant also is accused of submitting falsified tax returns which resulted in an $11,318 of tax refunds, none of which she was not legally entitled to.

Adding to the list of charges, the AG also alleges that Ms. Craig, who served on the Newton PTO from 2013 to 2014 as Treasurer, funneled approximately $14,593 from the PTO Council to her own personal accounts.

The AG’s Insurance and Unemployment Fraud Unit is handling this case and stresses that all of the charges are allegations, with the defendant presumed innocent until proven guilty.
