The Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts (IFB) announced that its Board of Governors appointed Anthony DiPaolo as Executive Director effective March 1, 2020. DiPaolo succeeds Daniel J. Johnston, who will retire in March. Mr. Johnston was the IFB’s first Executive Director.

The IFB was formed in 1991 after the passage of the enabling legislation. It has been recognized as one of the leading fraud bureaus in the nation. It is funded by an assessment against the insurance industry, requiring no taxpayer dollars. Its staff investigates and assists in preparing criminal prosecutions of insurance fraud in cooperation with the US Attorney, the Massachusetts Attorney General, and the various district attorneys around the state.

Mr. DiPaolo, a resident of Beverly, joined the IFB in 1992 and has been the Vice President, Chief of Investigations since 2006. He oversaw all investigative activities of the IFB’s premium fraud unit since its inception in 1994. In March 2019, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Executive Director.

Prior to joining the IFB, Mr. DiPaolo was with the U.S. Air Force for ten years as a Special Agent, concentrating on fraud investigations. He has extensive experience in developing fraud detection programs. Mr. DiPaolo earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Wilmington College and his Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University. Since 1996, he has been an adjunct instructor at Northeastern University in their criminal justice program teaching courses on white-collar crime and criminal investigations. Mr. DiPaolo is a frequent speaker on a variety of insurance fraud topics and is a member of the National Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
