Liberty Mutual Insurance Announces Recipients of Its 2018-2019 Scholarship Program for Massachusetts Community College Students of African-American Descent

Through its annual LEADA@Liberty Scholarship, Liberty Mutual presented its four 2018-2019 recipients with $2,500 per year for each of the four years of their college career.  Launched in 2017, the LEADA@Liberty Scholarship program is designed to offset the cost of college for Massachusetts students who are enrolled in a community college through the Massachusetts Commonwealth Commitment and who plan to complete a degree at a state university or University of Massachusetts campus.

Liberty Mutuals Scholarship Provides Four Students $2500 Each Per Year for Four Years Partnership with Mass Department of Higher Education Offers Additional Financial Incentives

The recipients of the 2018-2019 LEADA@Liberty Scholarship are:

  • Jamilatou Jalloh, Roxbury Community College
  • Nakisha Meres-Gabriel, Massasoit Community College
  • Nwamaka Oneyocha, Roxbury Community College
  • Marven Jean-Jacques, Massasoit Community College

The LEADA@Liberty scholarship is one part of our ERG’s overall strategy to form new partnerships with the community and expand our future talent pipeline,” said Stacy Ann Hull, Operations Chair of Liberty Mutual’s Employees of African-American Descent and Allies (LEADA@Liberty) employee resource group.  “We are pleased to invest in the college careers of students like Jamilatou, Nakisha, Nwamaka, and Marven to not only create the potential for employment with Liberty Mutual, but also to assist them in charting a path to success.  Offsetting the cost of college tuition and the resulting student loan debt is a win-win for community college students, Liberty Mutual Insurance and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

The first of its kind in the nation, the Commonwealth Commitment is the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education’s innovative college affordability and completion plan that aims to help more Massachusetts students achieve the dream of a college career.  The plan commits Massachusetts public colleges and universities to providing a series of financial incentives to students who begin their studies at one of 15 community colleges, earn an associate degree within two and a half years, and then transfer to a state university or University of Massachusetts campus to earn a baccalaureate degree.  Liberty Mutual is the Commonwealth Commitment’s first private sector partner.

We’re delighted to see Liberty Mutual and the LEADA@Liberty team stepping up once again to support students in our Commonwealth Commitment program,” said Carlos E. Santiago, Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education. “Our goal is to encourage students to complete college and enter the job market ready to hit the ground running. With Liberty’s generous scholarships and internship opportunities, our community college students have an even greater opportunity to transfer and realize their dream of earning a bachelor’s degree before entering the workforce.”

Administered by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the LEADA@Liberty scholarship is available to students of African descent attending community colleges in Massachusetts.  In addition to the scholarship, through the Commonwealth Commitment, students who attend college full-time and maintain a 3.0 GPA receive a freeze on tuition and fees, a 10 percent rebate at the end of each successfully completed semester, and a full MassTransfer tuition waiver in their third and fourth years at a university.

The UNCF New England office is proud of its continued partnership with Liberty Mutual Insurance on the LEADA@Liberty scholarship program,” said UNCF Northeast Vice President Diego Aviles.  “This year, UNCF is celebrating its 75th anniversary of helping young people of color obtain a college degree. Since 1944, more than 460,000 students have been able to realize a higher education thanks to a UNCF scholarship. Without vital supporters like Liberty Mutual, we could not help to advance educational opportunities for students in the Greater Boston area.  We are grateful for their generosity.”
