Gerald Boardman Church, age 85, died on April 9, 2021, in Boca Grande
The following is a reprint of his obituary published in the Boca Beacon and on Legacy.com:
Gerry graduated from Dexter School in Brookline, MA and St. Mark’s School in Southborough, MA before attending Harvard College where he was an active member of the A.D. Club. A talented athlete, he excelled in football and ice hockey. After Harvard, Gerry served in the U.S. Army and then worked for two family insurance agencies, Fred C. Church and Boit Dalton & Church, finishing his career at Aon Corporation, where he was the firm’s leading expert on financial services insurance. He also was active in the leadership of Crossroads, Inc., an outgrowth of Boys & Girls Camps.
Gerry was a devoted family man who adored his wife and three daughters and always put his family first. Spending time outdoors teaching his girls how to play ice hockey, tennis and golf made him truly happy. He was an avid squash player at the Union Boat Club and court tennis player at the Tennis & Racquet Club, but golf was his true passion. He was actively involved with the United States Seniors Golf Association and a two-time President of The Country Club in Brookline, MA where he presided over the 1999 Ryder Cup. Gerry enjoyed trips to Augusta National with a group of friends who played together annually for nearly forty years. Known for his wry sense of humor, kindness, and generosity, Gerry had many friends, both on and off the course.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maria Bright Church, their daughters Emily Church and Laura Wilmerding, three siblings Fred, Jr., Richard, and Diana Dohrmann, three grandchildren Maya Schmidt, Ben, and Sophie Wilmerding. He was predeceased by his daughter Alison Church and sister Lisa King.
Burial services will be private with a memorial service later this year.
