Applicants for an open spot on the federal bench in Massachusetts have until the end of the month to get their information filed with an advisory committee.
Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey announced Wednesday that they are reconvening an advisory committee, chaired by retired federal Judge Nancy Gertner, to help fill the seat that is opening up due to the retirement of Judge Timothy Hillman.
The Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Judicial Nominations will review and interview candidates and provide recommendations to the senators. The senators said the search process will include advisory committee members William Ogburn, Angela Onwuachi-Willig, Pamela Berman, Jack Corrigan and Dehlia Umunna. Leonardo Angiulo, Gina Plata Nino and Lyonel Jean-Pierre will also serve on the committee.
The president of the United States nominates federal judges, who need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate in order to be sworn in. “The names of potential nominees are often recommended by senators or sometimes by members of the House who are of the President’s political party,” according to the U.S. Courts.
