Insurance Commissioner Joseph Murphy has been elected to the National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s Executive Committee and as a Secretary-Treasurer of the Association’s Northeast Zone, which spans from Maine to Washington, DC. These new appointments will expand both the Commissioner’s profile and leadership role on national insurance issues. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners or NAIC is a voluntary organization formed in 1871 of the chief insurance regulatory officials of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five territories.
“I am proud to have won the confidence and support of my fellow commissioners,” said Murphy, “In recent years the Patrick-Murray Administration and our Division of Insurance have made significant strides in auto and health insurance and I look forward to sharing those experiences and results with insurance commissioners from around the country.”
In February 2010, Governor Patrick named Murphy, 36, Commissioner of Insurance. Prior to this appointment, Murphy had served as the First Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Insurance. As Undersecretary of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Barbara Anthony views it, “Commissioner Murphy has proven he can bring consumer-friendly reforms to insurance while also balancing the need for a stable and solvent industry. His experience and ideas are valuable assets for commissioners around the country.”
