Mr. Helm was a well-known independent insurance agent in Needham
Former Massachusetts insurance agent Robert W. Helm, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on December 12th in Hingham. He was 89.
Born in Newton, MA on July 29, 1928, Mr. Helm attended Newton High School, the Tilton School, and Brown University. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth as well as his four sons and their families which include 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Many in the Massachusetts insurance industry will remember Mr. Helm as the founder and owner of the Robert W. Helm Insurance Agency. Mr. Helm, who founded the Needham-based independent agency in 1955 also was a co-founder of the Needham Assoc. of Independent Insurance Agents.
In addition to his insurance career, Mr. Helm also served as a Needham Town Meeting Member for 25 years, as well as the Boy Scout Troop 10 Needham leader, and with the Christ Episcopal Church, also in Needham. Mr. Helm eventually retired to Marion. Avid sailors, along with his wife Bette, the couple were members of both the Beverly Yacht Club and the Sippican Tennis Club. Mr. Helm also was a member of Nehoiden Lodge, AF&AM, and St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, Marion.
According to his obituary, a Celebration of Mr. Helm’s life will be held on Saturday, January 20th, at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 124 Front Street, Marion, MA at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, Marion, or the Alzheimers’ Assoc. www.alz.org.
