Massachusetts Attorney General
Attorney General Maura Healey has announced that her office has launched a new Data Breach Reporting Online Portal. The new portal, available via the Attorney General’s website, offers organizations the option of reporting a data breach online instead of having to deliver a hard copy notice.
The aim of the new online portal is to make it both easier and more efficient for companies to comply with the Massachusetts Data Breach Notification Law.
Data breaches are damaging, costly and put Massachusetts residents at risk of identity theft and financial fraud – so it’s vital that businesses come forward quickly after a breach to inform consumers and law enforcement,” said AG Healey. “This new feature allows businesses to more efficiently report data breaches so we can take action and share information with the public.”
According to the AG, since November 2007, it has received notices of more than 21,000 breaches. In 2017, alone, the AG received notices of 3,821 breaches affecting more than 3.2 million residents.
Enacted on Aug. 2, 2007, in The Massachusetts Data Breach Notification Law (M.G.L. c. 93H) requires any entity that owns or licenses a consumer’s personal information to notify any Massachusetts residents affected as well as both the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation (OCABR), and the AG’s Office in the event any personal information is accidentally or intentionally compromised.
According to the AG, a data breach may occur due to intentional hacking or because of human error, such as sending an e-mail to the wrong person or losing a laptop. Institutions experiencing data breaches range from the largest, most sophisticated institutions in the state to small businesses with only one or two employees. While many breaches affect a relatively small number of consumers, many entities have experienced data breaches affecting large numbers of consumers.
Mass RMV
Just a couple of interesting tidbits from the Mass. RMV.
In December, the Registry announced that it had obtained a one-year extension in order to comply with Federal law and to begin to issue these new ids on March 16, 2018.
REAL ID is a new type of driver’s license or identification (ID) card that the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is implementing under federal law for citizens or lawfully-present residents. The extension means Massachusetts license or ID card holders may use their existing valid license or ID for purposes of entering a federal building or for traveling by air through October 1, of 2020. Residents who have a valid U.S. passport or passport card will never need a REAL ID.
Second, we wanted our readers to know that the Mass RMV now has a new webpage for veterans, which can be accessed here.
Lastly, the RMV has now extended the license renewal time from 9 to 14 years which permits many more residents to renew their licenses online instead of having to go to a Registry office.
“The Registry is pleased to offer these helpful enhancements to service options that are currently available to our customers,” said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Erin Deveney. “We encourage customers to conveniently renew their driver’s license or MA ID card online if they are eligible to do so, saving a trip to a service center …”
To be eligible for online renewal, a customer’s license/ID card photo must be less than 14 years old and must have been taken after the customer’s 21st birthday.
