The Governing Committee of the Automobile Insurers Bureau of Massachusetts (AIB) announced the appointment of Kim Barber as President of the AIB effective March 1, 2020. Ms. Barber succeeds Daniel J. Johnston, who will retire in March after 30 years in the position.
AIB has operated in Massachusetts since 1926. It provides actuarial experience for the auto insurance industry in the state. Its members include over 250 insurers writing personal auto insurance and commercial auto insurance in Massachusetts.
Ms. Barber has been the Vice President, Chief Actuary of the AIB since joining the bureau in 1994. Prior to this, she served as an actuary for two national insurance companies. In March 2019, she was promoted to the position of Executive Vice President. In this capacity, she manages the Actuarial, Member Services, and Data Management departments and is personally responsible for all AIB rates, rules, and form filings, as well as overseeing all Detail Claim for private passenger auto, and since the adoption of “Managed Competition” in 2008, she has developed advisory rates and industry analyses to support AIB’s member insurers. She has also overseen commercial auto filings which are used by many smaller carriers, and spearheaded the development of vehicle rating groups as an alternative to ISO symbols in Massachusetts.
Ms. Barber, a graduate of Wheaton College in Norton with a degree in mathematics, is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). She is a resident of Marblehead.
