MAPFRE Announces Leadership Changes in North America

September 11, 2020 by Agency Checklists

The changes are part of the insurer’s management team reinforcements throughout the company’s principal markets

MAPFRE has approved a broad renewal of its management teams to advance its strategic objectives, and accelerate the company’s transformation agenda, strengthening capacities in the main regions where it operates. The renewal of the management team, which has been carried out with internal talent and in accordance with the provisions of the company’s Succession Plans, also seeks to strengthen the group’s ability to respond to the economic and social challenges of the complex global context.

Antonio Huertas, chairman and CEO of MAPFRE, affirmed that “the renewal of the management team allows us to capitalize on the extraordinary internal talent we have at our disposal within the company. All the appointed executives bring great experience and deep knowledge of our Group with them to their new positions. I am convinced that they will give a renewed boost to our operations that will benefit our clients and allow us to advance with our company’s profitable growth plans.”

MAPFRE notes that the mission of the new CEOs, namely in the U.S. and Brazil, is to accelerate the profitable scenario envisaged in the Strategic Plan. In the United States, a newly-created position of Chief Operations Officer (COO) is also included, to be filled by an executive with broad experience in the Group’s Business and Clients Area.

With that said, MAPFRE announced that it has appointed Jaime Tamayo Ibañez as CEO of North America in substitution of Alfredo Castelo Marín, who joins the insurer’s Corporate Areas. José Manuel Corral Vázquez has been appointed as the first Chief Operations Officer  (COO) for MAPFRE USA.

Both appointments come into effect on January 1, 2021.

Mr. Tamayo returns to Massachusetts after first arriving in 2008 with MAPFRE’s acquisition of Commerce Insurance

Mr. Tamayo first began his career with MAPFRE in 1993 and has held a number of executive positions in both the insurer’s Puerto Rico and U.S. operations. In 2001, he was chosen to lead MAPFRE’s operations in the United States, serving as the CEO of MAPFRE USA in Florida, and Chairman of MAPFRE Puerto Rick from 2004-2016.

In 2008, he transferred to MAPFRE”s Massachusetts headquarters serving as President and COO of MAPFRE USA from 2008-2010 and then as President and CEO of MAPFRE USA from 2010 until 2016. In 2017, he left Massachusetts to serves as the MAPFRE’s CEO of its International Region.

As for Mr. Corral Vazquez, this appears to be his first position with MAPFRE outside of his native Spain. He first joined the Spanish insurers in 2006 in the company’s offices in Northern Spain. Since then, he has risen through the ranks, most recently serving as MAPFRE’s General Director of Business and Clients since 2018.
