Mr. Briggs is the Chairman and CEO of the Quincy Mutual Group

K. Douglas Briggs has been named the 2020 Insurance Professional of the Year by the Insurance Library Association of Boston. A well-known member of the Massachusetts insurance industry for over three decades, Mr. Briggs has been the Chairman and CEO of the Quincy Mutual Group and its affiliates since 1985. Before taking the helm of one of the Commonwealth’s oldest mutual insurers, he served in various positions including Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Prior to joining Quincy Mutual, Mr. Briggs was employed by Coopers & Lybrand Certified Public Accountants.

A graduate of Cornell University, Mr. Briggs received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1975, later followed by an M.B.A in Accounting from Babson College. In 1979, he was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in Massachusetts, and earned the Certified Property Casualty Underwriter designation in 1992.

A long association with the nation’s oldest insurance library

Mr. Briggs has long had a strong relationship with Insurance Library Association of Boston, serving on the Library’s Board of Trustees since 2000. From 2007 until 2009, he served as the President of the Board, while also having previously chaired the Library’s Investment Committee. In addition to his work with the Library, he also is a former Director of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America; former Governing Committee Member Automobile Insurers Bureau of Massachusetts; past Chairman Mutual Fire Insurance Association of New England; former Trustee of Eastern Bank and past Chairman of the Bank’s Audit Committee; Director South Shore YMCA; and Director of Friendship Home.

In commenting on the selection of Mr. Briggs, the Insurance Library’s Executive Director, Paul Tetrault said:

“Our annual Insurance Professional of the Year event is something that the Greater Boston insurance community looks forward to each year, both to honor a special individual who has contributed to the industry and society in a meaningful way and to congregate and connect with a wide range of friends and colleagues.  While the pandemic resulted in us postponing our event and having it in a virtual format, we are nevertheless looking forward to hosting an event that retains as much of the characteristics of our in-person event as possible.”

“We are truly looking forward to recognizing Doug Briggs who has been an exemplary leader of not only his company but also the Library for so many years as a trustee and former president of the board.  The responses we have received via email and social media since the announcement was made have consistently exclaimed,  ‘Great Choice!’ and we expect to hear more of the same as we lead up to the event.”

More about the Insurance Professional of the Year Award

Established in 2002 by the Richard Simches Fund, the Insurance Professional of the Year Award is presented each year to “…a person who demonstrates leadership and exemplifies those qualities that engender understanding of and respect for the insurance industry.”  The selection process is conducted by a cross-section of the insurance industry and as such carries with it that added significance.

Obviously with the COVID-19 Public Health crisis, this year’s IPYA award’s luncheon did not take place in October. The Insurance Library, however, is planning to host a virtual event in the Spring with Mr. Tetrault telling Agency Checklists that tentative date will be held on May 14th.

In the meantime, those interested in donating to the Library’s annual silent auction, should get in touch with librarian Sarah Hart at shart@insurancelibrary.org.

More about the Insurance Library Association of Boston

For those Agency Checklists readers who may not be familiar with the ILAB, The Insurance Library Association of Boston has been serving the reference, research, and education interests of the insurance community in Massachusetts and beyond since 1887. It is the only remaining private library dedicated to insurance. This is truly a place where you can find everything you need to know about insurance.
