In Memoriam: James W. Coyne, Jr., 1942-2023

Former Co-owner / Operator of Coyne & Powers Insurance Agency, Inc.

James W. Coyne, Jr., 81, of Westport peacefully passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Janet R. (O’Donnell) Coyne.

Mr. Coyne was born in Fall River, son of the late James W. Coyne, Sr. and the late Honora E. (Powers) Coyne and had resided in Westport for most of his life. A proud Vietnam War veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force and Army. Prior to retirement, he was the co-owner / operator of Coyne & Powers Insurance Agency, Inc. in Westport. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport. Mr. Coyne was a former member of the Westport Board of Selectmen and served on many town boards. He enjoyed reporting the town election results over the years. Jim will always be remembered for his sense of humor and kind heart.

Survivors include his son: Derek J. Coyne and his wife Sabine of N. Attleboro; his 3 daughters: Laurie A. Fernandes and her husband Jeff of Westport; Alicia M. Medeiros and her husband John of Portsmouth and Betheny A. Borges and her husband David of Westport; 12 grandchildren: Michael, Lindsey, Tanner and Nicholas Fernandes, Halle, Ciara and Nia Coyne, Landon Leger, Dylan and Lucas Medeiros and Matthew and Ryan Borges; a great granddaughter: Hailey Fernandes; and his friend: Elaine DuPont of Dartmouth.

He was the father of the late Stacy L. Leger, brother of the late Honora M. Coyne and brother-in-law of the late Joyce Pinto.
