Liberty Mutual Insurance Appoints Monica Caldas to Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The 22nd annual MIT Sloan CIO Symposium has announced Monica Caldas, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Liberty Mutual Insurance as the winner of the MIT Sloan CIO Leadership Award. Over the past eighteen years, the Award has recognized Chief Information Officers (CIOs) who lead their organizations to deliver exemplary levels of business value through the innovative use of IT.

“On behalf of the MIT Sloan CIO Symposium Awards Committee, we are pleased to present the 2025 CIO Leadership Award to Monica Caldas, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Liberty Mutual Insurance,” said Dr. George Westerman, Award Co-Chair. “This year’s finalists are redefining what it means to lead in IT. Their vision, innovation, and impact are setting new standards – and lighting the way for fellow CIOs to follow and build upon.”

Monica Caldas is executive vice president and chief information officer of Liberty Mutual Insurance, the eighth-largest global property and casualty insurer. She leads Liberty Mutual’s global technology organization, overseeing all aspects of information technology and data engineering across the company. Caldas has been a crucial leader at the company since joining in 2018 as global chief information officer of Liberty’s global retail markets business, where she spearheaded its transformation into a strong and aligned global organization.

In the community, Caldas is a champion of diversity networks for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. She sponsors the Liberty Encouraging Girls in Technology team within Liberty Mutual’s Women in Technology group, and is also active in Hispanic affinity networks. Caldas’ industry impact is widely recognized; among many honors, in 2022 she was named a Women in Insurance Leadership Honoree by Digital Insurance, as well as one of Hispanic Information Technology Executive Council’s 100 most influential Hispanic leaders in technology. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Management Information Systems from the University of Connecticut and an MBA from Pennsylvania State University.

“I’m deeply honored to receive the MIT Sloan CIO Leadership Award and to stand alongside such an incredible community of technology leaders who are shaping the future of our industry,” said Caldas. “This recognition is not mine alone – it belongs to the remarkable team of technologists, colleagues, and strategic partners I have the privilege to lead and learn from every day. Together, we’ve built an ecosystem of innovation, resilience, and shared purpose – leveraging this inflection point in technology to reimagine what’s possible. At Liberty Mutual, we believe technology is more than a capability – it’s a force multiplier to serve our customers in bold new ways. This moment isn’t just about what we’ve achieved; it’s about the future we’re building – together.”

Dr. Westerman presented the award to Caldas at the MIT Sloan CIO Symposium Leadership Award Dinner on May 20. The other distinguished Award finalists were Dimitris Bountolos, chief information and innovation officer at Ferrovial, and Bill Pappas, head of global technology and operations at MetLife.
