Public Comments are Due by January 5, 2026
Massachusetts has opened a public review of the long-awaited Cape Cod bridge replacements, kicking off an environmental assessment that will help determine the future of the aging Sagamore and Bourne spans.
Gov. Maura Healey has set her sights on replacing the aging Sagamore Bridge by 2027, as they also prepare to later replace the Bourne Bridge. The state received a massive federal funding jolt for the project under President Joe Biden, but Washington’s support has wavered under President Donald Trump.
The state launched a draft environmental impact statement for the project in November — a necessary regulatory step that includes information on how the proposed bridge and road improvements would change how people travel to and from Cape Cod, and how it could affect nearby communities.
“[We’ve] been working very closely with our partners on the federal side, working through the environmental process,” Massachusetts Department of Transportation Interim CEO Phil Eng told the News Service.
He said, “Those bridges are immensely important. I know we don’t own them, but we want to deliver those projects with our partners on the federal side. The communities that rely on them, the economic importance of those bridges, and the people that live right around them — so, we are moving forward.”
Comments on the environmental review are due by Jan. 5, 2026.
After that, the next step is a request for proposals.
“We’re looking forward to being able to get into the RFP phase next year,” Eng said. “And then moving forward, with regards to some industry engagement. We want to have competition. It’s a huge, monumental effort. But it’s vitally important. And we’re really excited to be able to deliver that.”
