Insurance veteran John P. Murphy has been named the new Executive Director of the Massachusetts Insurance Federation (the Federation). He succeeds James T. Harrington, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Mr. Harrington had lead the trade association since its original conception in 2001. In his new position, Mr. Murphy will coordinate the Federation’s advocacy pertaining to the pertinent public policy issues involving insurance that come before both the legislative and executive branches.

“I’m thrilled and honored to follow my long-time friend and mentor, Jim Harrington, as leader of the Federation,” Murphy said.  “We have an extraordinary foundation upon which to grow and enhance the Federation’s position as the leading voice of the property and casualty industry in Massachusetts. I can’t wait to get started.”

Twenty-five years of experience in the Massachusetts insurance industry

A Massachusetts insurance industry veteran for more than 25 years, Mr. Murphy brings with him to his new position a wide breadth of experience within the property and casualty insurance industry as well as extensive knowledge of the legal and public policy issues that impact Federation member companies.  In addition, he claims both company and trade association experience, having worked in-house at leading Massachusetts insurance companies and as the New England regional manager for two national insurance trade associations.

“Federation members are very excited to have John as our new Executive Director,” said Dan Olohan, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of MAPFRE/Commerce Insurance and President of the Federation.  “John brings years of valuable experience and a deep understanding of the issues facing the property and casualty market in Massachusetts.  He will be a great leader for our organization. ”

He is a graduate of St. Francis College in Loretto, PA, Mr. Murphy earned a Master’s of Art degree in political communication from Emerson College and a Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law.
