Travelers says in-house large language model improves underwriting, research, and access to institutional knowledge
In a significant step forward for the insurance industry, The Travelers Companies has announced the launch of TravelersLLM, a proprietary large language model (LLM) designed specifically for its property and casualty insurance business.
According to the company, TravelersLLM was built by its engineers and data scientists and trained on millions of company documents. Travelers said the model is designed to enhance underwriting analysis, accelerate research and model development, facilitate access to decades of institutional knowledge, and improve workflows across the organization.
Moreover, in testing against tens of thousands of insurance-related questions, Travelers said its proprietary model consistently outperformed commercially available AI models by delivering higher-quality results more quickly and at lower cost.
“TravelersLLM combines our vast amounts of well-curated data and our industry expertise with leading AI capabilities, all delivered to the point of need, improving decision quality and productivity at scale,” said Mojgan Lefebvre, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology & Operations Officer at Travelers. “It works alongside leading frontier models and brings a level of precision and context that is unique to Travelers.”
Designed as part of Travelers’ broader AI strategy
The company said the development of TravelersLLM reflects its long-standing strategy of combining proprietary data with advanced technology. Travelers described the model as a foundational capability within its broader artificial intelligence ecosystem, supporting agentic applications across the enterprise.
Lefebvre said the model is intended to make the company’s institutional knowledge more readily available to employees.
“By making our institutional data, experience, and expertise instantly accessible across the enterprise, our colleagues can act more quickly and effectively, delivering even greater value to our customers and distribution partners,” she said.
CIO 100 recognition
Travelers also noted that TravelersLLM received a CIO 100 Award earlier this year, recognizing organizations that use technology in innovative ways to deliver business value.
