Sperling Brings Four Decades Of Investment Experience

Liberty Mutual Insurance has elected Scott M. Sperling, co-chief executive officer of Boston-based private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners, to its board of directors, adding an executive with more than four decades of experience in institutional investing, private equity and corporate governance.
Sperling has been with Thomas H. Lee Partners since 1994 and serves as Co-Chief Executive Officer, Co-Chair of the firm’s management committee and a member of its investment committee, helping shape investment strategy, portfolio oversight and firm leadership at the Boston-based private equity firm. He helped grow the firm to manage more than $50 billion in equity capital and to partner with more than 175 companies.
Prior to joining Thomas H. Lee Partners, Sperling spent more than a decade as managing partner of the Harvard Management Company affiliate that managed all alternative asset classes for Harvard University’s endowment fund. Earlier in his career, he was a senior consultant with the Boston Consulting Group.
Longstanding Corporate And Nonprofit Board Experience
Sperling brings extensive board and nonprofit leadership experience, including serving on the board of Thermo Fisher Scientific since 2006 and as its lead director since 2022. He is also board Chairman of Massachusetts General Brigham, Chairman Emeritus of the CitiCenter for Performing Arts and Wang Theater, and is a member of the Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors. He holds a bachelor of science from Purdue University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
“I’m honored to join Liberty Mutual’s board of directors. As a company built to help people embrace today and confidently pursue tomorrow, its mutual structure and deep risk expertise set it apart,” said Sperling. “I look forward to contributing to the board’s work and supporting the executive leadership team’s vision for the organization’s future.”

“We are pleased that Scott has joined our board of directors. He is an accomplished leader with more than four decades of experience in institutional finance and private equity, and a strong track record of creating value across a wide range of industries,” said Sweeney. “Scott’s perspective on capital allocation and long-term value creation, together with his experience guiding complex organizations as a director and board chair, will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our business and deliver for our customers.”
