The new Commissioner of Insurance has over 25 years experience in the MA insurance industry
The Division of Insurance has a new Commissioner. On Monday of last week, The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation welcomed Daniel R. Judson as the new head of the Division of Insurance. A well-known veteran of the Massachusetts insurance industry, the newly minted Commissioner says he is excited by the opportunities and challenges that await him.
“I have accepted Governor Baker’s appointment as Commissioner of Insurance with great enthusiasm,” Dan Judson said. “The Massachusetts insurance marketplace is the tenth largest in the country, and its work touches the daily lives of every citizen as well as the bottom line of every business. Regulating that marketplace to the benefit of all is an exciting challenge, and I am grateful for the opportunity,” Judson concluded.
Commissioner Judson replaces former Commissioner Joseph Murphy, who resigned in December 2014. Upon hearing the news of Mr. Judson’s appointment, former Commissioner Murphy said that the selection of Mr. Judson was an inspired choice.
I first met Dan when I was a young staffer on the Insurance and Financial Services Committee in the Legislature and Dan was counsel at DOI. He was a great resource and advisor to us as we evaluated complicated insurance related legislation. Since that time, I’ve had the good fortune to work with Dan as CAR’s outside counsel and then when he became President of CAR while I was Commissioner of Insurance, ” explained former Commissioner Murphy.”
The Insurance Commissioner’s job is one of the most demanding jobs in state government – balancing the solvency of our industry with the protection of consumers. I also consider the job the best in state government – one where the decisions you make impact every resident of the Commonwealth in some way,” added Murphy. Dan has been preparing for this job during his entire career and is well suited to lead the Division of Insurance. By coincidence, I am now COO of a company Dan worked at along the way. All of us at Coverys wish Dan the best of luck as he embarks on his tenure as Commissioner and congratulate Governor Baker on an excellent pick!”
Mirroring similar sentiments, Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development Secretary, Jay Ash and the Consumer Affairs and Business Undersecretary John Chapman also noted how lucky the Division was to have someone with Mr. Judson’s extensive insurance experience take over the Division’s top spot.
“As the Commissioner of Insurance, Daniel Judson brings a wealth of insurance experience from the public and private sector, and is a great addition to the team at Consumer Affairs and Business Regulations,” said Secretary Jay Ash.
“We are very pleased to bring someone with Dan’s background and experience to the Division of Insurance,” said OCABR Undersecretary John Chapman. “His experience will be an asset as we represent consumers in this crucial aspect of the lives of Massachusetts residents.”
