Sumar Succeeds Melissa MacDonnell, Who Retired in October 2025

BOSTON (Jan. 8, 2026) – Liberty Mutual Insurance today announced that Nageeb Sumar has joined the company as President of Liberty Mutual Foundation, where he will lead the company’s philanthropic strategy and community investment portfolio. Sumar succeeds Melissa MacDonnell, who retired in October 2025.
In his role, Sumar will report to Francis Hyatt, Liberty Mutual Chief Community Investments & Sustainability Officer, and will oversee the Foundation’s grantmaking operations, strategy development, financial stewardship, and partner relations. He will be responsible for shaping and executing the Foundation’s long-term vision, cultivating strategic partnerships, and ensuring Liberty Mutual’s philanthropic investments drive measurable outcomes across the communities it serves.
“Nageeb is a proven leader in the philanthropic sector with a deep understanding of how to drive impact at scale,” said Hyatt. “His experience across corporate, institutional, and individual philanthropy will be instrumental in advancing Liberty Mutual’s purpose and our commitment to advancing security and building resiliency for communities.”
Sumar brings more than 20 years of experience in global philanthropy, corporate social impact, and nonprofit partnerships. He joins Liberty Mutual from Fidelity Investments, where he served as Head of Social Impact and led the firm’s first major philanthropic initiative, a $250 million, multi-state college success program supporting under resourced students.
“I am honored to lead Liberty Mutual Foundation into its next chapter. Together with our nonprofit partners, we have an extraordinary opportunity to further shape our philanthropic strategy, drive innovation, scale our impact, and create lasting change in the communities we serve,” said Sumar. “Building on this remarkable legacy, I am committed to deepening collaboration and continuing the positive impact of our work in the community for years to come.”
Prior to Fidelity, Sumar held senior roles at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he led global philanthropic partnerships and donor engagement strategies across the U.S., China, India, and the Middle East. He has worked in 17 countries and facilitated partnerships with G7 and G20 governments to support global health and development initiatives.
Sumar holds degrees from Cornell University, Queen’s School of Business, and McGill Law School, and currently serves on the boards of the Aga Khan Foundation USA and Charity Navigator.
Established in 2003, Liberty Mutual Foundation is dedicated to advancing security and building resiliency for individuals and communities. Through strategic grantmaking and partnerships with nonprofit organizations, the Foundation supports initiatives that address housing stability, education access, workforce development, and climate resilience. Since its inception, it has awarded more than $450 million in grants to over 1,300 nonprofit partners, reflecting Liberty Mutual’s belief that progress happens when people feel secure.
