Boston’s Knapp Schenk and Co. Sells To Cross Insurance

January 5, 2016 by AC Editor

Cross Insurance has acquired over 100 insurance agencies in New England since 1954

Cross Insurance has acquired another Massachusetts insurance agency. On December 21, 2015 the Bangor-based agency issued a press release on its Bangor Daily News community news page, announcing its purchased of Boston-based Knapp, Schenck & Co. According to the terms of the agreement, Knapp Schenck will continue to operate as is, meaning it will retain its name and operate with the same staff out of the same locations.

“We are thrilled to welcome Knapp Schenck & Company to the Cross Insurance family of agencies,” said Royce Cross, CEO of Cross Insurance. “We look forward to combining forces and expanding our service offerings in Boston and the South Shore.”

Founded in 1921, Knapp Schenk Boston’s financial district headquarters is on India Street. The agency also has a second branch office in Braintree. As a large regional property and casualty retail insurance agency, Knapp Schenk provides a wide variety of insurance services with a focus on commercial and residential real estate ownership, management and development, construction, manufacturing, distributors and wholesalers of all types, non-profit organizations, municipalities, and private schools.

“We are pleased that Knapp Schenck & Company has affiliated with Cross Insurance, one of the largest independent agencies in New England. It was the ideal time and Cross is the ideal partner. Just like Knapp Schenck, they are family owned and operated, which was an important factor in our decision,” said David Winship, President at Knapp Schenck. “Because each agency in the Cross Insurance group is separately managed and independently operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary, Knapp Schenck clients should expect few changes beyond our team gaining more resources and access to more markets.”

Cross Insurance now has 10 locations in Massachusetts alone

Founded in 1954 by Woodrow Cross, Cross Insurance has grown via strategic acquisitions over the past 60 years to become one of the largest insurance agencies in New England. Still family-owned and operated, Mr. Woodrow Cross just celebrated his 99th birthday on December 29th, the agency now boasts more than 700 employees operating out of 35 offices located in Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Florida.
