January 29, 2024 by AC Editor

Warren P. Hayes

Warren P. Hayes of Hanover passed away on January 19th at the age of 92. He was the son of the late Percy and Mildred Hayes of Braintree where he was raised. He was a graduate of Braintree High School, Boston University college of Business Administration, and the Officers Candidate School at the USCG Academy in New London, Ct. After serving for three years on active duty with the Coast Guard, he remained in the active reserve and retired as a Commander in the USCGR.

He entered the insurance business after active duty as a salesman, sales manager, and branch manager with Sentry Insurance in Boston, Wisconsin, and New York. He entered the insurance agency part of the business after moving his family back to Hanover, first the William C. Field Agency and then with Agents Insurance group and finally with Burgin Platner Insurance in Quincy where he retired in December of 2022. He specialized in marine insurance and was a lifelong avid yachtsman. He was a life member and past Commodore of the Satuit Boat Club in Scituate.

He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Mary Jane (Kilborn) who became a noted marine writer and photographer as the two cruised the coast from New Brunswick to Florida in their various sail and power yachts, culminating with the beloved Grand Banks 36, “Sea Story II”.  He was also predeceased by his son, Peter of Weymouth.

He is survived by his daughter Julie Thompson and her husband David Hebden of Hanover, his two adored grandchildren Alex Thompson of Los Angeles and Abby Thompson and her fiancé Justin Ogilvie of Plymouth as well as his sister Margaret Tesson of Raynham.  He also leaves his longtime companion of the last decade, Anne Bussiere of Norwell with whom he was an active member of the United church of Christ in Norwell. He had the good fortune to spend his final year at Benchmark assisted living facility in Hanover where the staff provided him with exceptional care.

Private Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sullivan Funeral Home in Hanover.
