Workforce Initiative Targets Entry-Level Talent Pipeline for Massachusetts Agencies

The Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA) has launched a new workforce development initiative aimed at recruiting, training and licensing new entrants into the property and casualty insurance industry, while connecting them with job opportunities at member agencies.
The Insurance Career Pathway program is designed to address ongoing staffing challenges facing independent agencies by establishing a structured pipeline of entry-level professionals trained in personal lines coverage and agency operations.
“Finding and developing new talent is a top priority for our industry,” said Nick Fyntrilakis, president and CEO of MAIA. “The Insurance Career Pathway program introduces motivated individuals to insurance careers while helping MAIA member agencies connect with trained, entry-level professionals who are ready to contribute from day one.”
Scholarship-Funded Training and Licensing Preparation
The program is offered on a full scholarship basis to individuals not currently employed in the insurance industry who are seeking to enter personal lines roles. Participants receive:
- Full tuition coverage, valued at $2,000
- One attempt at the Massachusetts Property & Casualty licensing exam
- Foundational agency training and professional development support
A $150 commitment fee is required upon acceptance and is refundable upon successful completion.
The first class began on February 17; however, additional sessions will be offered on a rolling basis throughout the year.
Eligibility Requirements and Licensing Standards
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Massachusetts residency and at least 18 years of age
- Not currently employed by a MAIA member agency
- Legal authorization to work in the United States
- Ability to complete the full program schedule
- Compliance with Massachusetts licensure standards, including suitability requirements under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 175 Section 162R
Curriculum Covers Personal Lines and Agency Operations in Massachusetts
Participants complete a 60-hour training program combining on-demand and live instruction. The curriculum includes:
- Insurance fundamentals and personal lines coverage
- Homeowners, condominium and auto policy forms and endorsements
- Personal umbrella policies
- Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles procedures
- Agency operations, workflows and documentation standards
- Agency Management System platforms, including Applied Epic and AMS360
The program also includes targeted preparation for the Massachusetts P&C licensing exam.
Upon completion, participants are expected to have a working understanding of coverage concepts, agency workflows and professional expectations in a personal lines environment.
Placement Support for MAIA Member Agencies
Graduates who complete the program and meet licensing requirements will be made available to MAIA member agencies seeking entry-level hires. MAIA will provide placement assistance to facilitate connections between candidates and agencies, though placement is not guaranteed.
“This is a win-win,” Fyntrilakis said. “Participants gain a supported entry into a rewarding field, and agencies gain access to trained, licensed, and industry-ready talent.”
Application Process Now Open
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. Selected candidates will be required to complete a pre-admission interview prior to acceptance.
MAIA represents nearly 1,000 independent insurance agencies in Massachusetts, with an estimated 9,000 employees statewide.
