A Rousing Return: The New England Insurance Industry Celebrates Mary Boyd, The 2022 Insurance Professional of the Year

November 7, 2022 by AC Editor

The Annual Awards Luncheon Returns for the 1st Time in 2 Years

After two long years, the New England insurance industry returned in-force to celebrate the 2022 Insurance Professional of the Year, Mary Boyd. Hundreds of insurance professionals from around the region turned out to honor the President & CEO of Plymouth Rock at the 20th edition of the annual Awards Luncheon held on October 28th. Continuing the tradition begun in 2019, this year’s luncheon was again held at the InterContinental Hotel beginning with a cocktail hour and Silent Auction at 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch and speeches at 12:00 p.m.

The Insurance Library’s biography of Mary Boyd

Mary Boyd

As the President and Chief Executive Officer of Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation, Mary has financial responsibility for their nearly $900M Independent Agency Auto, Pilgrim services, and Umbrella liability business. Readying her growing business for sustained success, Mary is currently guiding her team through a multi-discipline digital evolution of their business that connects product, customer and agency partner digital experiences across the customer life-cycle.

Since 2006, Mary has held President and division leadership roles; reliably improving net income in each case by maximizing channel economics, applying her commitment to best-in-class partnership management, and advancing operational excellence.

She joined Plymouth Rock in 2018, from The Hartford, where she held the position of Senior Vice President with responsibility for both their Agency and Direct channels personal insurance businesses. Prior to that, Mary invested 15 years of her career in high-net-worth personal lines, beginning her tenure at Chubb as an actuarial trainee and expanding to roles of increasing responsibility; most recently as President of their Private Risk Services division.

Mary received her bachelor’s degrees in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Rutgers University. As a coach of youth sports, ambitious professionals, and entrepreneurs alike, Mary loves developing talent, improving technique, and unleashing the power of strong teams; individually and together.

A seasoned executive with a strategic vision of insurance

Mary is a seasoned senior executive with over 25 years of applying her diverse set of skills to leading businesses through transformative phases in their history that span invention, renovation, integration and rebuilding. Her career reflects a strong track record of translating strategic vision into reality, evident as she leads organizations tackling operations, technology and team transformation. She brings innovation and an agility of approach that explain her successes in both seeing the forest and navigating the trees by spotting the strategic opportunities in the space between them.

The Awards Ceremony in photos

Established in 2002 by the Richard Simches Fund, the Insurance Professional of the Year Award is presented each year by The Insurance Library Association of Boston to “…a person who demonstrates leadership and exemplifies those qualities that engender understanding of and respect for the insurance industry.”  The selection process is conducted by a cross-section of the insurance industry and as such carries with it that added significance.

For those who were unable to attend, once again Agency Checklists is providing a slideshow of some of the many memorably moments from this year’s event. As always, thank you to the Insurance Library and its photographer Robert Castagna for providing us with such great photos. Enjoy…
