Arbella Insurance Group Founder and Chief Executive Officer, John Donohue, Announces Retirement

March 6, 2025 by AC Editor

Organization appoints Paul Brady as the next CEO of the company

Quincy-based Arbella Insurance Group has announced appointment of its Executive Vice President and Head of Claim, Paul Brady, as Chief Executive Officer, effective June 1, 2025. He will succeed John Donohue, who will continue in his role as Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Foundation (Foundation).

Founding Arbella alongside the late Massachusetts Attorney General, Frank Bellotti, Donohue has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors since the company’s creation in 1988, and as CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group for the last 24 years. Donohue’s background in law, policy, claims, liability, and marketing positioned him as an industry-leading CEO and a charismatic leader known by agents and employees across New England. Over the years, Donohue balanced his positions on many of Boston’s most prestigious Boards and Councils with overseeing Arbella’s strategic planning, corporate policy, and charitable giving initiatives for the Foundation since its inception in 2005. Donohue will remain a positive force supporting Arbella’s award-winning culture as Chairman of its Board.

For nearly 15 years, Paul Brady has been instrumental to Arbella’s success. Currently serving as Executive Vice President and Head of Claim, he has held numerous leadership positions at Arbella including Chief Information Officer and SVP of Operations. His insurance career began in the IT department at Liberty Mutual and his background in technology makes him an ideal leader to foster innovation at Arbella as the company enters its next chapter.

“As I assume the role of CEO, I’d like to recognize all that John and our co-founder, Frank Bellotti, have done to build this great organization,” Brady said. “Arbella’s unwavering mission, commitment to customer service, and our community-oriented culture have made it a best place to work for 16 consecutive years. I am honored to lead our team in delivering exceptional value to our agents and customers while we continue to build a business that puts people first.”

Supporting Brady will be Arbella’s highly tenured and talented executive team, who will continue to collaborate with their new CEO to deliver innovative insurance products and services to many across New England. As Chairman of the Board, Donohue will continue to influence the company’s strategy and support the insurance industry around legislative initiatives.

“It has been a privilege to serve as founder and CEO of Arbella and I am confident that our company will continue to thrive under Paul’s leadership,” said Donohue. “He brings broad technical experience, exceptional client service skills and the ability to lead a highly engaged organization. But most importantly, Paul is a cultural champion who strongly believes in empowering employees, giving back to the community and selling our products through independent agents.”

Since its founding in 1988, Arbella achieved impressive progress during Donohue’s tenure, growing to more than $1 billion in annual written premium and achieving an A rating from AM Best. Additionally, Arbella’s Foundation has donated more than $45 million over the past 20 years to New England organizations and consistently ranks among the most charitable companies in Massachusetts. This leadership transition represents a natural progression, and Arbella looks forward to building on its success and remaining a fixture in the local community.
