In Memoriam: William H. Flanagan, 1931-2022

September 20, 2022 by AC Editor

Mr. Flanagan was the owner of the Flanagan Insurance Agency

William H. Flanagan, Jr., a resident of Needham, Massachusetts for 52-years, died peacefully on August 21, 2022.

William H Flanagan Jr

Bill was born in Boston, MA, on August 22, 1931, to William H. Flanagan, Sr. and Catherine (Lynch) Flanagan. Growing up in South Boston and then Milton, MA, he attended St. Sebastian’s High School (class of ’49), and Boston College (’53).

Bill met his loving wife Clare Lyons in 1948. They married in 1955 and celebrated their 67th anniversary this past April.

After tending bar in South Boston during the 1950’s, Bill began his career in the insurance industry with John Hancock in 1961, then with Allstate in 1963. In 1988, he founded Flanagan Insurance Agency, Inc. in Lexington, MA. Bill was also a proud co-founder of the allMass Group, a local network of insurance agencies.

Bill was the devoted father of Kay Martland and her husband Ted of Nashua, NH; Carol Healey and her husband Tony of Needham; William Joseph Flanagan and his wife Christine of Walpole; Ann Marie Rogers and her husband Chris of Shrewsbury; Susan Cosolito and her husband Frank of Medfield; Edward Flanagan and his wife Sarah of Arlington; and Richard Flanagan and his wife Leslie of Braintree. Bill is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, all of whom he adored. Bill was predeceased by his sisters Anne Thompson and Joan Cochran, his brother Jack Flanagan, his daughter Mary Flanagan, and his grandson Jake Rogers.

A proud member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph’s Church in Needham, Bill’s life was one of faith and service. He was a talented poet, raconteur, and had a joke for any occasion.
