Frederick J. Hansberry, Jr. a longtime resident of Andover, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 26, 2023, at the age of 89. He was the beloved husband of the late Gladys A. (Olson) Hansberry who died in 2018.
Born on March 20, 1934, he was the son of the late Frederick and Maryellen (Nilan) Hansberry. Fred grew up in Wellesley, attended St. Bernard’s School and was a proud Double Eagle having graduated from Boston College High School and Boston College. After serving two years in the Army, he began his long and prestigious career in the insurance industry. He worked as a Vice President for Fireman’s Fund, Warner, and Eastern Casualty Insurance Companies. He was named “Company Representative of the Year” by the Professional Insurance Agents of New England in 1983 and was a former president of the Insurance Managers’ Association.
While he enjoyed his work, he most loved spending time with family and friends. You could often find him playing a round of golf, watching his kids and grandkids play sports, going to a sporting event or musical, reading the paper with a cup of coffee or a book with a cat or dog on his lap, trying new restaurants, striking up a conversation and making friends everywhere he went, or attending an AA meeting (this year he celebrated an inspiring 51st AAversary). Above all, he will be remembered for his boundless generosity which touched so many.
He is lovingly survived by his children, Christopher Hansberry of Andover, Kathleen Hansberry of South Portland, Maine, and Daniel Hansberry and his wife, Angela of East Longmeadow; grandchildren, Madison, Charlotte, and Ryan; sister, Joan DeFazio of Milford; and many nieces and nephews. Fred is predeceased by his sister, Nancy Gately.
