Cambridge-based platform now allows personal AI agents to initiate quote after initially blocking them from the site
In an update issued on October 28th, online insurance comparison platform Insurify has announced that it will now allow personal AI agents to access its site and obtain quotes on behalf of the humans they work for. If our readers remember, earlier this fall, the company announced it would block all AI Agents from its site, citing security concerns after reports that Meta’s Muse was obtaining quotes for its customers by accessing the platform directly without permission.
As outlined in our earlier article, Insurify’s actions in blocking Muse and other AI Agents was not because it was against the use of personal AI Agents on their platform, rather it was how these entities were accessing the company’s proprietary data.
“People should be able to use the AI agent they choose to shop for insurance and have confidence in the information they receive,” said Giorgos Zacharia, co-founder and co-CEO of Insurify. “We’ve built a way for agents to work with our marketplace that preserves coverage details, protects personal information, and keeps consumers in control. That gives carriers a foundation to reach customers through an important new distribution channel.”
Building on the company’s first-to-market ChatGPT plugin for insurance shopping, the gateway establishes a common, consistent framework for AI agents to access the company’s insurance marketplace while maintaining coverage information, consumer privacy safeguards, and carrier disclosures. All types of AI agents will have access via the Gateway, including OpenAI’s Dots, Meta’s Muse, and Instinct.
The Three Ways AI Agents Can Connect with Insurify
Insurify’s new AI Gateway provides three different methods for AI agents to interact with its marketplace. Each method depends upon how the AI agent actually operates.
- A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. A direct connection for AI assistants and apps that use MCP, an open standard many AI tools use to connect to outside services.
- WebMCP tools on Insurify.com. Tools built into Insurify.com that let AI agents working in a web browser complete shopping steps directly, rather than reading and clicking through each page. WebMCP is a proposed web standard for connecting websites to AI agents.
- A dedicated web interface for personal AI agents. An optimized version of Insurify’s shopping experience built for agents that navigate websites on a consumer’s behalf.
All three interfaces connect to the same insurance marketplace and are subject to the same consumer protection requirements established by Insurify.
Preserving Coverage Information and Consumer Protections
Overall, the new AI gateway is designed to welcome AI Agents into a defined shopping experience, that allows the platform to preserve the coverage information necessary for consumers to evaluate insurance quotes, including policy limits, deductibles, eligibility requirements, and applicable disclosures.
Under the company’s framework, participating AI agents must identify themselves and access the marketplace through approved integrations.
Consumers must also provide appropriate consent for sharing personal information. In addition, carrier quotes are required to retain relevant coverage details, carrier attribution, and disclosures consistent with Insurify’s existing shopping experience.
The gateway also maintains a connection to participating insurance carriers through Insurify’s existing integrations, allowing consumers to review coverage, obtain assistance when necessary, and complete the policy binding process directly with the carrier.
Insurify said these requirements are intended to preserve carrier control over how insurance products are presented and purchased through AI-assisted shopping.
Insurify Sees AI Agents as New Distribution Channel
As Insurify’s latest announcement confirms, AI Agents are only beginning to change the insurance distribution landscape.
“We see AI agents as an important way for people to shop for and compare insurance,” Zacharia said. “Our responsibility is to make that experience work for both shoppers and carriers. We’re inviting agent developers to build with us so consumers can benefit from these tools with the information and protections they need.”
