2nd Look 2025: Market Share For MA Auto Marketplace

March 10, 2025 by AC Editor

Commerce continues to be the largest Private Passenger Auto Insurer in MA

Published every other month, Agency Checklists’ CAR Updates review the latest data on the current state of the Private Passenger Automobile Insurance marketplace. For our second look of the year, this update reviews the market share data as of December 2024, the latest date for which complete data is available.

In terms of what the data shows, as of December 2024, Commerce continues to hold the largest share of the private passenger auto insurance market, with 19.02% market share and 936,254 exposures, maintaining a strong lead over its competitors. GEICO follows with a 12.61% market share and 620,576 exposures, while Progressive (9.78%) and Safety (9.63%) remain close competitors, each with over 470,000 exposures. Notably, Plymouth Rock (7.70%) and Arbella (7.25%) also hold significant positions in the market.

The top ten insurers collectively dominate the sector, accounting for more than 75% of total exposures. Hanover, Metropolitan, and Norfolk and Dedham Mutual round out the middle tier, each controlling between 2% and 3% of the market, while smaller carriers such as Green Mountain, Trumbull, and Bankers Standard each hold less than 0.5% market share. The total market exposures amount to 4,921,462, highlighting the competitive nature of the Massachusetts auto insurance sector, with a clear concentration of business among the leading insurers. The total market exposures stand at 4,921,462 as of the last month of 2024.

As always, many thanks to the Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers, which acts as the statistical agent for motor vehicle insurance in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and provides Agency Checklists with all the data presented here.
