In Memoriam: Charles F. Curtis, 1930-2022

March 14, 2022 by AC Editor

Charles Curtis passed peacefully on February 24, 2022 in New London, NH. He was just shy of his 92nd birthday. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Alison. Chuck was born on March 26, 1930 in New Haven, CT to Howard Loring and Susan Fowler Curtis. He (Charlie) was one of 48 graduates of the class of 1948 at Hopkins School in New Haven, CT.

He went on to continue his education at Dartmouth College, receiving a AA degree with Distinction in Economics. At Dartmouth, he was a member of Sigma Chi and the Dragon Society. He also had a distinguished football career at Dartmouth setting many records. His football career culminated with him being selected to play in the East-West Shriners Allstar game in Palo Alto, CA.

Following his college years, Chuck served in the U.S. Navy as a LTJG in the Korean War. He was commissioned as an Ensign and assigned to the amphibious ship USS Union in Coronado, CA. Arriving in Japan and Korea just as the armistice was signed, his primary job was to transport Chinese and North Korean prisoners to Inchon to be exchanged for U.S. servicemen.

While at Dartmouth, Chuck met the love of his life, Alison, at Colby Junior College and they were married on February 14, 1954. As newlyweds, Chuck and Alison settled in San Diego, CA. Upon Chuck’s discharge from the Navy, they moved to Philadelphia where Chuck began his lifetime career in insurance and financial planning. He managed offices in Philadelphia PA, Wilmington DE, Burlington VT, and Boston MA. The balance of his career was spend as a broker/part owner with Boston Insurance Center, retiring in 1995 as Vice President of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. of MA. He earned professional degrees (CLU, ChFC, ARM) and taught business and Federal Estate Taxation courses at Northeastern University. He also served as Vice President and President of the Vermont and Boston Life Underwriters Associations.

Chuck and Alison lived in Lynnfield, MA for 30 years raising their four children before retiring to New London, NH in 1995. The family had a vacation home in New London since 1972 and loved calling New London their home. Chuck was an avid golfer who enjoyed many years at Salem Country Club in Peabody, MA and Lake Sunapee Country Club in New London, NH where he had 2 hole-in-ones and won 3 Senior Club Championships.

He was committed to his family and community. Chuck served as Chairman of the Council on Aging and was an active member of The First Baptist Church of New London serving as a Deacon with his wife, Alison, and as a Trustee.

Chuck will be dearly missed by his four children and seven grandchildren: Christine Douglas and husband Neal Douglas, and daughter Michelle; Cynthia Curtis and husband Thomas Redinger, and son Tucker; Chip Curtis and wife Corinne Curtis and son Chase, daughter Molly, son Will; Scott Curtis and wife Valerie Curtis, and sons Hunter & Jack. He will also be greatly missed by his 9 grand-dogs.

A memorial service is being planned at The First Baptist Church in New London, NH on July 30, 2022. Donations in Chuck’s memory can be made to Dartmouth Athletic Sponsors (DartmouthSports.com/Sponsors).
