Ed graduated from Cathedral High School in 1948 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Saint Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont, in 1952.
After college, Ed served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. The agency, under his guidance, flourished, providing a range of insurance products and serving the community with integrity and dedication.
Ed was deeply involved in numerous community and veteran organizations. He was a member of the American Legion Post 430, Veterans of Foreign Wars, John Boyle O’Reilly Club as a gold card member, Hampden County Association of Insurance Agents, and a life member of Springfield Lodge of Elks #61. He also served as a Former 18-year Member of the Springfield Police Commissioners, Emergency Medical Service Commission, and received the 1980 John J. Burke Award for Outstanding Service to Law Enforcement from the Western Mass Chiefs Association.
Ed’s contributions to Saint Michael’s College were recognized with several honors, including Alumnus of the Year in 1964 and as a Golden Knight member. He held a position as an Associate Trustee and remained actively involved in the college’s alumni association.
Predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Margaret “Peggy” (Cavanaugh) Keating, and his daughter Erin E. Keating, Ed’s legacy continues through his children, Kerry A. Keating, Edward W. Keating, and Matthew J. Keating and his wife Chantal, along with his grandchildren, Cameron and Brett Keating. Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno reflected on Ed’s lasting impact, noting his strong character and dedicated service, both in his professional life and in his many years of community service. “Commissioner Keating was a proud son of ‘Hungry Hill’ and loyal to the core. He loved our Springfield Police Department and our brave and dedicated ‘men and women in blue.’ Rest in peace, my friend, your job has been well done. God Bless,” said Mayor Sarno.
Edward J. Keating will be remembered as a man of integrity, a dedicated serviceman, a successful business leader, and a beloved member of the Springfield community. His legacy of service and commitment to his community will endure through the many lives he touched.
