1st Look 2026: Market Share Report for MA Auto Insurance Marketplace

Published every other month, Agency Checklists’ CAR Updates review the latest data on the current state of the Private Passenger Automobile Insurance marketplace. For our first look of the year, this update reviews the market share data as of October 2025, the latest date for which complete data is available.

For those readers unfamiliar with the Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers, better known as “CAR”, it is the official statistical agent for motor vehicle insurance in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

A Look at the Latest Data on Insurer Premiums & Market Share as of October 2025

As of October 2025, the Massachusetts private passenger auto market comprised 36 insurers writing a combined 4,251,405 exposures (100.00% market share).

The market is highly concentrated: the top five carriers—Commerce, Progressive, GEICO, Safety, and Plymouth Rock—accounted for 2,513,649 exposures and 59.12% of the market. Concentration increased sharply at the next tier, with the top 10 insurers representing 3,598,778 exposures and 84.64% market share. By the top 25, the market was essentially fully captured, totaling 4,223,724 exposures and 99.34% share, leaving the remaining 11 insurers to split roughly 27,681 exposures (about 0.66%) collectively. Commerce led the market with 777,785 exposures (18.29%).
