Lowell’s Byam Bros-Mahoney Agency Joins Duffy Insurance

January 29, 2024 by AC Editor

Agency has been a part of Merrimack Valley community for over 100 years

Duffy Insurance Agency expands its geographic footprint north of Boston with a new agency addition to start off 2024. The Lynn-based agency announced its acquisition of the Byam Bros.-Mahoney Insurance Agency of Lowell, MA.

“I am happy to welcome Byam-Bros.-Mahoney Insurance Agency, its staff and customers into the Duffy Family of Insurance Agencies. For more than 100 years Byam Bros. has maintained a stellar reputation in the Greater Lowell area. The personal service that the loyal customer base has received over the years will continue,” said Marc Duffy, President of Duffy Insurance Agency.

According to the terms of the agreement, the Byam Bros.-Mahoney Insurance Agency location will remain open and will operate under the Duffy Insurance Agency name.

No further terms of the agreement were disclosed.

A Note from Francis “Fran” Coulter CIC, President of Byam Bros.-Mahoney Insurance Agency

For over 118 years “Byam Bros.” has proudly provided the residents and businesses of Lowell MA and the Merrimack Valley with quality insurance products, a high level of property and casualty insurance knowledge and most of all fast, accurate and dependable service.

Our family-owned and operated insurance agency originated in Chelmsford, MA, in 1906 and moved to Lowell several decades later. In 1956, Byam Bros. merged with the Vincent Mahoney Agency and became the Byam Bros. – Mahoney Insurance Agency, Inc.

We are proud and pleased to announce that effective January 1, 2024, Byam Bros. is now a member of the Duffy family of Insurance agencies.

Our decision to join the Duffy Group was the result of two very important factors. 1. An extremely friendly relationship I developed with Marc Duffy and his dad Paul when Marc and my son played on the same baseball team (20 or so years ago) and 2. when I was convinced that the Duffy Group shared Byam’s commitment to the highest level of knowledge and competence, providing the customer with quality insurance products at fair prices, and an understanding that our agencies and employees work for our customers, not the insurance companies. Over the years, both of our agencies have seen insurance companies come and go, but they both continue to grow because we care.

Byam Bros.-Mahoney Insurance Agency is Duffy Insurance’s first acquisition in 2024 and its 10th since 2020

Founded in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1996 by the late Paul Duffy and currently led by Paul’s son Marc Duffy, Duffy Insurance Agency is a family insurance agency that services personal and commercial insurance customers throughout Massachusetts. A large portion of this growth has come via the acquisition of other Massachusetts independent insurance agents.

The acquisition of Byam Bros.-Mahoney Insurance Agency marks the tenth external acquisition completed by Duffy since July 2020. These acquisitions include:

  • N. Pingree Insurance Agency Georgetown, MA (July 2020)
  • Barry and O’Connor Lynn, MA (Dec 2020)
  • Charles A. Slee Insurance Agency Marblehead, MA (Aug 2021)
  • A.J. George Insurance Agency Peabody, MA (Sept 2021)
  • Allan Insurance Agency Salem, MA (June 2022)
  • B&M Insurance Agency Wakefield, MA (December 2022)
  • Boyd Neelon Insurance Agency Sudbury, MA (April 2023)
  • Lauranzano Insurance Agency Beverly, MA (October 2023)
  • DeAngelis Trinity Insurance Agency Framingham, MA (October 2023)
  • Byam Bros.-Mahoney Insurance Agency Lowell, MA (January 2024)

“Although we have expanded in recent years, we continue to operate like a small, family insurance agency.  We don’t outsource customer service.   All customer service is done in-house by our team members.  This is key to us maintaining personal relationships with our customers.  This makes us a unique option for owners looking to retire but want to make sure their customers and employees continue to enjoy personal relationships that have been in place for many years,” said Marc Duffy.

Duffy Insurance adds that it continues to look to acquire independent insurance agencies in the Greater Boston Area. For those interested in learning more about the history of the Duffy Insurance Agency, please see our 2020 Agency Interview, “A North Shore Success Story: The $40 Million And Growing Duffy Family of Insurance Agencies“.
