A look at the latest data

Published every other month, Agency Checklists’ CAR Updates provide a detailed look at the latest trends in the private passenger automobile insurance market. In this third update of the year, we review market share data through February 2026, the most recent month for which complete data is available.

For readers unfamiliar with the Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers (CAR), it serves as the official statistical agent for motor vehicle insurance in Massachusetts.

CAR Year-Over-Year Insights

Comparing February 2026 with February 2025, the Massachusetts private passenger automobile market shows modest shifts among the top carriers. Commerce retained its lead, slightly increasing market share, while Progressive and Standard Fire saw the largest percentage gains. Safety, Arbella, and Plymouth Rock experienced small declines in share and exposures, and Allstate and Vermont Mutual also saw notable reductions.

Overall, total exposures decreased by approximately 18,700 year-over-year, reflecting a slight contraction in the market alongside gradual consolidation among the largest writers.
