4th Look 2026: Look 2026: Market Share Report for MA Auto Insurance Marketplace

CAR data shows Massachusetts auto insurance market share trends through Feb. 2026, with top 10 carriers controlling 86.45% of the market.

Published every other month, Agency Checklists’ CAR Updates provide a detailed look at the latest trends in the private passenger automobile insurance market. In this fourth update of the year, we review market share data through April 2026, the most recent month for which complete data is available. For those interested in viewing the latest April 2026 data on the Commercial Auto Insurance Marketplace, it can be found here.

For readers unfamiliar with the Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers (CAR), it serves as the official statistical agent for motor vehicle insurance in Massachusetts.

Market Concentration by Tier

The five largest insurers account for 60.32% of all private passenger automobile insurance exposures, while the top 10 insurers control 85.97% of the market.

Concentration increases further beyond that point, with the top 20 insurers representing 98.01% of all exposures, leaving the remaining 18 insurers to collectively account for just 1.99% of the statewide private passenger automobile insurance market.
