New England Agency M&A Down 55% Through Q3 2026

Only two agency acquisitions announced during the third quarter, compared with seven during Q3 2025

Agency Checklists’ tracking of publicly announced insurance agency mergers and acquisitions in Massachusetts and New England shows a continued slowdown, in line with the latest national data, through the third quarter of 2026. Just two agency acquisitions were announced between July and September, compared with seven during the same period in 2025, a decline of approximately 71%.

For the first nine months of 2026, Agency Checklists recorded 10 announced transactions across New England, compared with 22 during the corresponding period in 2025. The decrease of approximately 55% reflects a slowdown in regional agency M&A activity that began earlier in the year.

The trend is consistent with the decline in national insurance agency M&A activity reported by OPTIS Partners for the first half of 2026.

New England Agency Acquisitions Slow Throughout 2026

During the first half of 2026, Agency Checklists tracked eight announced transactions, compared with 15 during the first six months of 2025, a decline of approximately 47%.

Activity was concentrated early in the year, with four transactions announced in January, one in February, and none in March or April.

Deal announcements resumed in May with the acquisitions of Paradiso Insurance by Trucordia and The Insurance Source by Davis & Towle Insurance Group, followed in June by World Insurance Associates’ acquisition of Worcester-based Wolpert Insurance.

Other first-half transactions included MountainOne Insurance’s acquisition of Amy R. Morey Insurance Agency, Cushman Insurance Group’s acquisition of New Bedford’s Bergeron Agency, Starkweather & Shepley’s addition of DiMatteo Insurance Brokers, and Hanscom Federal Credit Union’s acquisition of Peoples Bank, which brought Fleetwood Insurance Group into the credit union.

The third quarter brought only two additional announced acquisitions, down from seven in the third quarter of 2025 and nine during the corresponding quarter in both 2023 and 2024.

During the first nine months of 2026, 10 acquisitions were announced, compared with 22 in 2025, 19 in 2024, and 27 in 2023.

The 2026 figures reflect transactions announced through September 30, 2026, while the figures for prior years reflect full-year activity.
