Agency Checklists’ proprietary list of purchases and sales of insurance agencies in New England
The year 2025 has started off relatively strong for mergers and acquisiton activity in Massachusetts. Overall, there were a total of eight insurance agency mergers and acquisitions reported to Agency Checklists during Q1-2025 surpassing the seven reported during the same time period in 2024. Duffy Insurance of Peabody was the most active agency buyer this quarter with two announced agency acquisitions.
The biggest acquisition announced this quarter, by far however, was the news that Kaplansky Insurance was acquired by Alera Group. Founded by Ely Kaplansky in 1974, Kaplansky Insurance grew from a single storefront into one of the largest privately held independent insurance agencies in Massachusetts prior to its merger. It also was one of the most active buyers in the Bay State having completed more than 50 insurance agency acquisitions over its five decades in business. With this addition of Kaplansky Insurance and its more than 100 agents, Alera Group has effectively become one of the largest insurance agencies now operating in the Commonwealth.
